- Pastor John Martin | Bridge Church
Then one day, God tapped John on the shoulder and changed his career path just a little bit. Following his call to ministry, John graduated from Regent University with a Masters in Practical Theology in 2008. He was ordained in January of 2011 by Conifer Community Church in Conifer, Colorado. John has been active in church life since his conversion and has served in multiple ways as a Layman; Elder, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of Missions, Chairman of Adult Ministries, Chairman of Prayer Ministries, and Chairman of Small Groups Ministries. In 2013, Bridge Community Church called him to come and serve as their pastor. John has been our Pastor since June 1, 2013. John has been married to his wife, Cindy, since 1978. They met while in High School, got to know each other within the church youth group, and began dating shortly after graduating from High School in 1975. John and Cindy have no children, but they love their two Bernese Mountain Dogs, Smoky and Appalachia. John says that one of his favorite books in the Bible is the letter to the Galatians. Their struggle with legalism is something we so easily fall into as well. When relaxing, he enjoys hiking, reading, and watching action movies. Recreational reading is generally westerns or sword and sorcery. Being “basically lazy”, both John and Cindy try to be consistent in getting enough exercise by walking every day. They currently live on Hartstene Pointe which is the perfect environment for walking! Don’t forget to tell John and Cindy how much you appreciate all they do for our church family. Is it best to pray standing up, sitting down, kneeling, or bowing down? Should our hands be open, closed, or lifted up to God? Do our eyes need to be closed when we pray? Is it better to pray in a church building or out in nature? Should we pray in the morning when we get up or at night before we go to bed? Are there certain words we need to say in our prayers? How do we begin our prayers? What is the proper way to close a prayer? These questions, and others, are common questions asked about prayer. What is the proper way to pray? Do any of the above things even matter? Answers : Far too often, prayer is viewed as a “magic formula.” Some believe that if we do not say exactly the right things, or pray in the right position, God will not hear and answer our prayer. This is completely unbiblical. God does not answer our prayers based on when we pray, where we are, what position our body is in, or in what order we word our prayers. We are told in 1 John 5:14-15 to have confidence when we come to God in prayer, knowing He hears us and will grant whatever we ask as long as it is in His will. Similarly, John 14:13-14 declares, “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” According to these and many other Scriptures, God answers prayer requests based on whether they are asked according to His will and in the name of Jesus (to bring glory to Jesus). So, what is the proper way to pray? Philippians 4:6-7 tells us to pray without being anxious, to pray about everything, and to pray with thankful hearts. God will answer all such prayers with the gift of His peace in our hearts. The proper way to pray is to pour out our hearts to God, being honest and open with God, as He already knows us better than we know ourselves. We are to present our requests to God, keeping in mind that God knows what is best and will not grant a request that is not His will for us. We are to express our love, gratitude, and worship to God in prayer without worrying about having just the right words to say. God is more interested in the content of our hearts than the eloquence of our words. The closest the Bible comes to giving a “pattern” for prayer is the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13. Please understand that the Lord’s Prayer is not a prayer we are to memorize and recite to God. It is an example of the things that should go into a prayer—worship, trust in God, requests, confession, and submission. We are to pray for the things the Lord’s Prayer talks about, using our own words and “customizing” it to our own journey with God. The proper way to pray is to express our hearts to God. Sitting, standing, or kneeling; hands open or closed; eyes opened or closed; in a church, at home, or outside; in the morning or at night—these are all side issues, subject to personal preference, conviction, and appropriateness. God’s desire is for prayer to be a real and personal connection between Himself and us.

Prayer is our lifeline to God. There is no life without prayer. But prayer can be misguided and self centered. Our Lord gives us a pattern for prayer that focuses on God, not ourselves and our desires. ADORATION “Our Father, who is in heaven” ‘Our’ shows we are part of the body of Christ, the community of believers. ‘Father’ emphasizes our continuing relationship with God. This relationship gives us access to Him. He loves and cares for His children. He is wise and able. ‘who is in heaven’ indicates His transcendence, greatness, and glory. He is over all, and providentially caring for each of His children. ‘hallowed be Your name’ is the first petition. God’s name and person is worthy of all honor and adoration. May this begin in our own hearts. We use His name reverently. We honor His name by walking worthy of His calling. We honor our Father’s name by having a character and life that pleases Him. SURRENDER TO GOD’S WILL “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven’ We desire Him to rule in our life and in our world. We submit our will to Him. We desire His will to be done (Psa. 40:8) in all areas of our life. DEPENDENCE “Give us this day our daily bread.” We depend on God to provide the necessities of life for our physical needs. He gives us life, strength, abilities, opportunities to work, and stable society so we can fulfill our responsibilities. We also need food for our soul from the Word, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit to enable us to live in Christ. FORGIVENESS “Forgive us our debts (sins), and we forgive our debtors (those who have sinned against us). We acknowledge that we have offended God and failed to love and obey Him fully. We come confidently to Him because He has promised to forgive us and cleanse us when we confess (agree with Him) our sins to Him (I John 1:9). We forgive those who have offended us. PROTECTION “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the Evil One”. The Lord is our shield. He is our protection from Satan. But there are real temptations. We pray He will enable us to recognize these temptations and chose the way of escape (I Cor. 10:13). We pray we will resist Satan so he will flee from us (I Pet. 5:8-9). WORSHIP AND PRAISE “Yours is the kingdom and power and glory forever.” We adore the Lord for His rule and authority and majesty which endures forever.

Each Sunday, chairs had to be set up in the main hall for worship service and then taken down again after service was over. Small groups met in homes for Bible Study and Prayer Services. In 2009, the current church building was completed which has greatly increased our ability to serve the community in various ministries and services held at the church. God has blessed our church richly and we give Him praise and glory for all he has done in our lives. In the 1940’s two couples on Harstine Island wanted to share their faith in God with the children. The Pearsons and the Pinards arranged for Mr. and Mrs. Knautz with American Sunday School Union to begin Sunday School in the school near the Harstine Community Hall. Willa Smith and Lena Tober and a Wingert girl attended that Sunday School and summer Bible camps. Later, Pioneer Community Church led by Pastor Denny Tyas met in Pioneer School. They were associated with American Missionary Fellowship, the new name for American Sunday School Union. In 1995 some meetings were held to discover what type of Christian ministry might be established on Harstine Island. By 1996, a group was meeting to plan and pray about establishing a Christian church in the area. The group included Willa Smith, Mel and Lyla Hadley, the Area Missionaries for American Missionary Fellowship, Don and Vi Burrows, who had participated in the Pioneer Church, David Allison, Jim and Sally Doherty, and Howard and Doris Spear. They searched for a suitable meeting place, and eventually secured the use of the Harstine Community Hall. The first service was held in the Harstine Community Hall on November 10, 1996. Everyone wondered how many would come. Many friends far and near came until 89 people filled the Hall. Randy Endicott led the music, Orval and Doreen Heath of Manchester presented special music. Mel Hadley told how he came to trust in Christ and eventually came to serve with AMF. Howard Spear spoke about ‘The Thirsty Woman’ from John 4. Sunday School was begun several months later. Many people have opened their homes for mid-week Bible studies and Men’s and Ladies’ Fellowship and other meetings. There had never been a church building on Harstine Island. While Harstine Hall provided a place to worship, there was need for space for a nursery, class rooms and a building available for Christian meetings through the week. A building fund was established and grew over the years. A building committee was formed to plan a facility. Property was donated, cleared and dedicated to the Lord on our 10th anniversary, November, 2006. With much discussion and prayer a plan was designed, a building permit secured, grading done, and construction begun. It was our goal to build this church building debt free. Some wondered how long that would take. Would there be long delays waiting for the necessary funds? God has enabled and moved people near and far to contribute to this project. Over $700,000 has been contributed and there is no debt. There has been no delay in waiting for funds. It is a testimony to God’s gracious provision for His work. There has been sacrificial giving without fund raising. Bernie Walton has given able leadership and many hours as building committee chairman. Others on the building committee included Dan Deffinbaugh, Gordon Foster, Kathy Funkhouser, Aleta Lewton, Willa Smith, and Norm Tober. Many individuals and contractors have donated their labor or given us exceptional deals to make this building a reality. Eugene and Ruth Stevenson lived on site in their trailer for several months and did plumbing and hundreds of other jobs. A loving and cooperative spirit has been evident through the whole building process. Our first worship service was held on September 6, 2009 with 170 people attending. We rejoice in our gracious God and celebrate His goodness in enabling us to have this building and use it for His glory. It is a wonderful place to fellowship and worship. We pray many more will come to know and love Jesus Christ and join the fellowship.
